Raise interest rates – by how much?
EconoMeter panel anticipates Federal Reserve action
from San Diego Union Tribune’s EconoMeter panel.
Q: Should the Federal Reserve raise short-term interest rates (currently 0-0.25 percent) and, if so, by how much?
Bob’s Answer: YES
Twenty-five basis points (a quarter percent) will not have a material impact on the economy yet will help banks and signal some strength in this current slow growth economy. Job availability, wage growth and consumer confidence are in a good place; 25 basis points will not raise borrowing rates enough to deter small business; and home buying and energy prices remain low. Inflation is in check and 2016 will be a solid year for the U.
S. economy.

Thanks for what in the local economy?
EconoMeter panel offers thanks
from San Diego Union Tribune’s EconoMeter panel.
Q: What are you most thankful for in terms of San Diego’s economy this Thanksgiving weekend?
Bob’s Answer: Local military
I’m thankful for our military that both protects us and keeps our economy humming, as well as our amazing science, technology, and communications sectors. We are blessed with incredible academic institutions that continue to spur innovation. I am also thankful for the opportunity to be a hotelier in San Diego. It is a noble profession to employ San Diegans and to host San Diego’s visitors.

EconoMeter looks at changes in Shamu show, hotel plans
from San Diego Union Tribune’s EconoMeter panel.
Q: Will SeaWorld’s newly announced its plans to change to its killer whale show and build a new hotel improve the company’s fortunes?
Bob’s Answer: YES
SeaWorld is a pillar of the region’s tourism economy, drawing millions of visitors from around the world. The park appeals to guests who stay at hotels, dine out at local restaurants and visit other attractions, further boosting the economic impact to the community.
SeaWorld’s economic impact on our region is immense with the employment of thousands of San Diegans and millions of dollars in rent payments to San Diego.
Time will heal.

EconoMeter panel considers the new funding bill
from San Diego Union Tribune’s EconoMeter panel.
Q: Will the new $339 billion transportation bill, passed by the House, speed important infrastructure in San Diego County?
Bob’s Answer: YES
The bill is expected to unlock funding to begin to restore our roads and transportation infrastructure but the problem is getting that money to San Diego. Our congressional team will need to work hard to direct those funds to our region. When we vote for our representatives next year, we need to keep this type of bill in mind!

Should restaurants ban tipping? EconoMeter panel advises
Instead businesses could raise meal prices and pay workers a higher wage
from San Diego Union Tribune’s EconoMeter panel.
Q: Should restaurants ban tipping and instead raise meal prices so they can pay their workers a higher wage?
Bob’s Answer: NO
The last thing we need is another regulation under the guise of fair wages. Servers can make a fantastic income in an environment where they make a base pay and have to earn tips.
Receiving the same pay as all others reduces incentives for good servers.
Sure they can get bonuses for good reviews but server wages should be paid largely in tips, not increased base wages nor in higher prices for dining.
Nobody wants that!
